Trucking Cost per Mile Calculator
Owner-operator cost per mile and per km from fixed and variable monthly costs.
How it works
Cost per mile = total monthly costs Ă· miles driven. If you enter fuel economy and fuel price, fuel / month is replaced by miles Ă· MPG Ă— price. Cost per km = cost per mile Ă· 1.609344. Price loads above your cost per mile, counting deadhead miles too.
Examples
- $23,000 of monthly costs over 10,000 miles = $2.30/mile ($1.43/km).
Typical vehicle fuel economy
The “Pick a vehicle” values are typical estimates based on US DOE AFDC and ATRI fleet averages, not ratings for your vehicle. The empty / bobtail, towing, and passenger-vehicle (pickup, SUV, car, hybrid) figures are our own estimates. Load, terrain, speed, idling and weather change real-world economy a lot, so use your own numbers when you have them.
- Class 8 tandem-axle semi tractor, loaded: 6.5 MPG (US) = 36.2 L/100 km
- Semi tractor, empty / bobtail: 8 MPG (US) = 29.4 L/100 km
- Single-axle dump truck, loaded: 6 MPG (US) = 39.2 L/100 km
- Single-axle dump truck, empty: 7.5 MPG (US) = 31.4 L/100 km
- Tandem dump truck, loaded: 4.5 MPG (US) = 52.3 L/100 km
- Tandem dump truck, empty: 6 MPG (US) = 39.2 L/100 km
- Box truck (Class 6–7): 7.5 MPG (US) = 31.4 L/100 km
- Cargo van: 15 MPG (US) = 15.7 L/100 km
- Heavy-duty pickup, towing: 10 MPG (US) = 23.5 L/100 km
- Full-size pickup: 20 MPG (US) = 11.8 L/100 km
- SUV: 25 MPG (US) = 9.4 L/100 km
- Midsize car: 30 MPG (US) = 7.8 L/100 km
- Hybrid car: 50 MPG (US) = 4.7 L/100 km

FAQ
Should I include deadhead?
Yes. Use all miles driven, loaded or empty.
