Stair Calculator
Calculate number of steps, riser height, total run and stringer length from total rise.
How it works
Risers = ⌈total rise ÷ max riser⌉. Riser height = rise ÷ risers. Treads = risers − 1. Total run = treads × tread depth. Stringer = √(rise² + run²). 7.75 in max riser and 10 in min tread are common US residential (IRC) limits; Canadian and local codes differ, so check yours.
Examples
- Total rise 108 in → 14 risers of 7.71 in, 13 treads, 130 in run, stringer ≈ 169 in.
FAQ
What is a comfortable stair?
A common rule: 2 × riser + tread ≈ 24–25 in (61–64 cm).
